It’s one of the most common questions we hear from Houston hosts: can I supply my own alcohol and just hire a bartender to serve it? In Texas, the answer is usually yes — and understanding how it works can save you money. Here’s a plain-English overview. (This is general information, not legal advice; always confirm specifics with your venue and the TABC.)
Even at a BYOB event, a licensed Houston mobile bar can handle the setup, ice, mixers and TABC-certified bartenders while you supply the alcohol.
The “dry hire” model
Most private BYOB events in Texas run on what’s called dry hire: you, the host, buy the alcohol from a licensed retailer, and the bartending company provides the labor, tools, and setup to serve it. Because the bartender isn’t selling alcohol, no special liquor permit is required for that service.
The key rule: no sale of alcohol
The line TABC cares about is whether alcohol is being sold. At a true private event, drinks must be free to any adult guest — no cash bar, no drink tickets, and no per-person charge that effectively covers the alcohol. The moment guests pay for drinks in any form, it’s considered a sale, which requires a Mixed Beverage Permit.
A few things to watch
- Skip the tip jar. A “tips” jar sitting next to free drinks can look like implicit payment. Genuine, unsolicited tips for good service are fine.
- Check your venue. If your venue already holds its own liquor permit, it will usually prohibit outside alcohol — so BYOB may not be allowed there.
- Use certified bartenders. TABC seller/server certification isn’t strictly required for dry hire, but professional bartenders carry it for responsible service and liability protection.
Should you BYOB?
For weddings and large private parties, BYOB is often the more cost-effective choice: you control exactly what’s served and pay retail for the alcohol, while licensed, insured bartenders handle the rest. The main downside is the shopping and logistics — which is where a little planning helps.
