If you want to bartend in Houston, the first question is usually “do I need a license?” The short answer: Texas does not issue a state bartending license. What most employers, venues, and event companies require is a TABC seller-server certification, which you can complete online in a couple of hours for a small fee. Here’s how it works, what it costs, and how it fits with actual bartending training.
Planning an event rather than a career? Every bartender on our Houston mobile bar team is TABC-certified.
TABC certification vs. a “bartending license”
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) certifies individuals who sell or serve alcohol through an approved seller-server training course. The certificate is valid for two years and is recognized statewide. There is no separate city or county bartending license in Houston. When a job posting says “bartending license required,” it almost always means a current TABC certificate, and often a food handler card as well.
How to get TABC certified
Take a TABC-approved seller-server course, which is available online from a number of providers and takes about two hours. Pass the exam at the end, download your certificate, and keep a copy on your phone. Course fees are typically in the $10 to $20 range. You must be at least 18 to serve alcohol in Texas, and TABC-certified staff are protected by “safe harbor” rules if they follow the training, which is one of the reasons employers insist on it.
Do you also need a food handler card?
If you’ll be handling garnishes, ice, or any food behind the bar, most Houston employers and all catering companies also require a Texas food handler certificate, which is another short online course. Every J Martini bartender holds both a TABC certificate and a food handler card, and we ask the same of anyone we hire.
Certification is not the same as being able to bartend
A TABC certificate proves you know the law. It doesn’t teach you to build a balanced cocktail, work a busy well, or handle a 200-person wedding. That’s what bartending school is for. A good program covers the classic cocktails and modern craft techniques, speed and efficiency behind the bar, setup and closing procedures, guest service and upselling, and, if you want to stand out, flair. Employers hire the bartender who can show these skills in a working interview, not the one with the most certificates.

Quick answers
How long is bartending school? Most Houston programs run from a single intensive weekend to a few weeks of evening sessions, depending on how deep you want to go. Ask about class size and how much time you’ll spend actually making drinks.
Can I bartend private events without an employer? Yes, and many bartenders start that way. You’ll want TABC certification, a food handler card, liability insurance, and enough experience to run a bar alone. The Houston bartender pricing guide shows what clients expect to pay.
Do I need to be 21? You must be 18 to serve alcohol in Texas. Some venues set their own minimum age of 21 for bartenders.
